When it comes to keeping your skin healthy and hydrated, nothing beats a face oil. Adding just one super easy step to your daily routine gets you tons of nutrients, moisture, and protection from the elements to prevent damage, signs of aging including blemishes, acne, redness, and wrinkles. It's like a super food for your face. But if you're new to using a face oil in your daily routine, you might have questions. When do you use it? How do you apply it? Here's everything you need to know about how to switch to face oils.

On the surface, it can feel a little counter-intuitive to apply oil directly to your skin. But it turns out face oils are the simplest and most natural way to give your skin the hydration and nutrients it needs while also protecting from environmental toxins. You might have tried a face lotion before, but most lotions are a mix of oil and water, which requires preservative ingredients to prevent mold and emulsifiers to keep the ingredients from separating. In other words, face oils are a great way to get all the benefits of a lotion without all the downsides of synthetic chemicals. EVEN if you have oily skin, you'll actually benefit from a face oil. Oily skin means your body is overproducing oil (this can be from a number of things including what you're eating or from skipping the moisturizer) and simply adding the right face oil will help balance, mattify and keep the blemishes and breakouts in check. Say goodbye to shiny oily skin.

  1. GIVE IT TIME. If you've been using drying or water-based products (or nothing at all) on your face, making an abrupt change to a face oil might impact your skin in the short term. Most people see great results right away, but if your skin is especially sensitive or you've been using harsh products, it might take a couple weeks to rebalance. Every face is different, so give it a chance to work its magic.

  2. START SLOW. If you're new to face oils, there's no need to use them every day right away. You can incorporate them a few days a week at first, then build up to every day when you feel ready.

  3. MIX IT UP. If the oil feels too heavy at first, consider starting out by mixing a few drops of oil with 1-2 sprays of our Face Toner in your palms before applying to lighten things up.

  4. START WITH NIGHTS. Skin is already in repair mode and super absorbent at night, which makes it an ideal time to apply a new face oil. It also allows you to try it out without interference from any other factors like sun or pollution.

Face oils should always be the final step in your routine. Since oil is hydrophobic, it'll seal out anything applied on top of it (which is why they're great at sealing in moisture and protecting your skin).

In the morning and before bed, after washing your face and/or applying toner, place 3-5 drops in your palm, then gently massage into face and neck using an upward and outward motion. That's really it.

If you're looking to get started and never used an oil before, we recommend starting with your Morning + Night Kit. Two oils, one for the morning, one for the night.
