CLAY POMADE VS HAIR PASTE: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

by McKenna Ruzga

Which hair product is right for you?

There have never been more options when it comes to hair styling products for men. Figuring out the right one for your style, length, and texture can take a lot of trial and error - but where do you even start? This guide will help you figure out the best option for the look and results you want.

What is hair clay?

Clay or Clay Pomade is a styling product made with, well, clay. Clay pomades are typically oil based, so they're great for handling humidity and sweat, but the clay in them helps absorb oil to maintain a matte finish. As the name indicates, the product itself is a thicker consistency out of the jar, but becomes more workable from the warmth and friction of your hands. Clay is newer on the hair product scene, but it's gained fast popularity for its ability to achieve serious texture and volume without greasiness. CLAY was our first product, and it's our most popular for a reason.

Product Consistency: Thick, workable
Hold: Medium to strong, 48 hours
Finish: Matte (low to no shine)
Other Benefits: Humidity and sweat resistant, hydrating, nourishes scalp
Best for: All hair types and lengths, but especially short to medium length hair, thick and wavy hair
Use if you want: Volume, thickness, texture, ability to reshape throughout the day
Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil, Bentonite Clay, Organic Beeswax, Organic Lavender Oil
How to: Use your finger to scoop a small amount. Rub between fingers to heat and smooth out. Apply to hair, working through roots for full coverage. Repeat if needed

What is hair paste?

Hair paste is one of the most versatile styling products out there, and pastes from different brands will vary a bit in consistency. Paste is a great "all-arounder;" it suits most hair types, is easy to work with, and can be styled in almost any way. Clay sometimes takes a few uses to perfect, but Paste is beginner friendly and great for a casual, more natural look.

Product Consistency: Creamy, smooth, thicker than a traditional pomade, less thick than Clay
Hold: Light to medium, 24 hours
Finish: Soft and natural
Other Benefits: Hydrating, nourishes scalp for thicker, healthier hair
Best for: All hair types, but especially curly hair, thin hair, or longer hair that needs shape but less hold
Use if you want: More shape, less hold, light texture, more relaxed look
Ingredients: Organic mango butter, Organic Castor Oil, Organic Beeswax, Kaolin Clay, Organic Arrowroot, Organic Essential Oil Blend
How to: Use your finger to scoop a small amount. Rub between fingers to heat and smooth out. Apply to hair, working through roots for full coverage. Repeat if needed. Pairs well with Hair Refresh Spray.

Paste vs Clay: The bottom line

Both hair paste and clay can work well for most hair types and lengths, but the right product will depend on your desired style and texture. For a lighter hold and more natural look and feel, or if you have thin or curly hair, Paste is a good go-to. If you're looking for more hold and volume, Clay is great to take things up a notch.

A lot of people like to keep both on hand for different styling needs or to change things up as their hair grows out a bit. You can even mix Clay and Paste to find your perfect texture.
