Not Your Average Sauna: Why You Need Infrared Light

by Kyle Bardouche

There’s not a lot that salt can’t heal – whether it be in the form of a swim in the Pacific Ocean here in Southern California where Jack Henry is based, or through electrolytes and mineral consumption to stay hydrated, or through good old-fashioned sweat. Daily sweat is necessary to lessen our toxic load and detox our bodies. This can result in better sleep, better mood, and overall enhanced quality of life.

The most effective ways to sweat daily are through exercise or sauna – but the overall best way to sweat is with an infrared sauna. An infrared sauna is not your average sauna. It is an elevated experience that offers many health benefits the standard dry or steam saunas can’t match.

First, what is infrared light? Infrared light wavelengths are part of the broad infrared healing wavelength spectrum. These wavelengths are able to penetrate soft tissue and open blood vessels. This is why infrared saunas are especially helpful in treating inflammation and pain. Infrared light has been used around the world to treat pain, skin conditions, chronic disease, and more.

Additional benefits of infrared saunas include:

1. Detoxification: Infrared saunas help increase blood flow and stimulate sweat glands. Toxins enter the body through our mouth, nose, and skin; we eliminate toxins through our sweat and through our liver, kidney, and colon. Daily sweating in an infrared sauna has the power to reduce your toxic load and eliminate harmful heavy metals, mycotoxins, glyphosates, alcohol, nicotine, and more.

2. Reduced Stress: The infrared sauna is the perfect sanctuary to unwind and enjoy solitude. Infrared saunas have been shown to activate the autonomic nervous system. This helps the body transition out of fight-or-flight and enter a parasympathetic state (rest and digest). This is incredibly healing to the nervous system and overall health of the body.

3. Increased Energy: With reduced stress and increased relaxation often comes better sleep. Consistent infrared sauna use promotes more restorative sleep cycles and increased energy throughout the day.

4. Pain and Inflammation: Infrared saunas are especially effective in treating pain and inflammation. The infrared light helps warm the muscles to relieve tension, pain, and improve flexibility and range of motion. Infrared saunas are extremely beneficial after an intense workout or for chronic pain sufferers. The infrared light increases blood circulation and allows for deeper penetration of heat to relax muscles and reduce inflammation, stiffness, and soreness while also providing oxygen-rich blood to the muscles for faster recovery.

5. Weight Loss: Ever heard of a passive workout? It’s when you receive all of the benefits of exercise without the stress on the body. Sweating in an infrared sauna produces sweat, pumps blood, and burns calories, all while in a relaxed parasympathetic state. A 30-minute session can burn up to 800 calories! Regular infrared sauna use can also improve metabolic health.

6. Immune System: Infrared wavelengths raise the body’s core temperature. This induces something similar to an artificial fever, which is the body’s tool for strengthening and accelerating an immune response to fight infection. This “artificial fever” boosts the immune system and increases overall health and resistance to disease.

7. Clearer Skin: Sweating in an infrared sauna eliminates impurities and dead skin cells while boosting circulation. This results in clearer, brighter, glowing skin with improved tone, texture, and elasticity. The increase in blood flow has been shown to repair and improve skin issues like acne, dermatitis, eczema, and wound healing.
